Looked in BestBuy. Fifteen or so mice out on display, and the
only Bluetooth one was the uber craptastic Apple one. Everything
else used a propriatary wireless USB dongle. And I just
hate having one of those little 1.5 inch dongles sticking
out from my laptop, begging to be snapped off...
personally, i'd recommend the logitech vx nano
(http://tinyurl.com/2j8bov ). sure, it comes with a wireless
dongle, but with the most tiny one you'll ever see. only sticks out
a few mms. and will never get in your way. and in contrast to the
logitech v470 i mentioned above, it comes with a
metal free-spinning scroll wheel, which is the
coolest and most comfortable thing i've ever seen on a mouse. it's
a must have, in my view.
I just ordered a Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 Laser Mouse for use
with my MacBook Pro. Oh, the irony. Apple just doesn't get it when
it comes to mice. Not even close to getting it... (I looked at the
Logitech mice, but all the review comments say they are small --
"travel sized". I want a regular size mouse. I also still use MS'
prior model Bluetooth mouse with my work laptop, and have been
quite happy with it.)
@afr: The other problem with
the USB dongles, no matter the size, is they burn one of the
precious few USB ports found on laptops. If someone made a laptop
with 6-8 USB ports, I would so be in line to buy one! (Granted, I
use my laptop as a portable all-in-one wonder charger for all the
gadgets I carry with me when I travel for work... Hence I often
have all three USB ports on my work laptop in use at once, and
could do for a couple more. A USB hub wouldn't cut it, as it would
have to be powered, and that then means another power adapter that
needs international plug conversion accessories.)
i hope you read the reviews before. many are complaining about
it's small site: "The 5000 is a great pointer, really precise, but
it's size (and I realize this is a notebook/travel mouse) has my
hand cramping up a lot."
@CAW: true. at home, i have a
powered 7x USB hub on my dell XPS. but when on the go, i don't mind
if one of those 2 USB is plugged with the dongle. i just wanted to
have that metal scroll wheel at any cost, and all bluetooth models
from logitech don't have that unfortunately.
Well, for how cheap it is, I'll let the order stand. If it's a
problem, then I'll look into another one. (I was't going by
pictures, but by the wired variant of it I physically laid hands on
in Best Buy.)
Late for this discussion, but I'll second @afr's Logitech VX nod. I have the VX
Revolution and the VX Nano. The Nano wins for portability, but the
Revolution (larger but still very portable) fits my hand better for
day to day use. The weighty, smooth-scrolling metal scroll wheel on
all of these Logitechs is simply addictive; I have a hard time
using anything else now. For laptop use at work, I keep a Logitech
laptop stand with built-in powered hub (so that the external
mouse/kb can just stay plugged in there). You're kinda required to
do something like that with the Air, though -- 1 port doesn't go
far otherwise :)
I've seen the VX Revolution. My desktop's mouse is dying, and
I've been considering getting one of those to replace it. The
Microsoft 5000 Bluetooth ended up being smallish, but so far hasn't
been overly uncomfortable to use.
Let me warn you again about that scroll wheel: addictive. I mean
like chocolate, good wine (or a nice after-dinner tawny), pizza and
peanut-butter (not at the same time). I'm spoiled forever for
anything else. Especially on the Mac (I don't know why, but their
Windows driver didn't do quite the same extra-fine smooth scrolling
as the Mac version last time I tried it).
@michaelf: totally. one
who hasn't tried it would never believe what a huge impact it has
on how it "feels" to operate the computer. let's say you want to
quickly scroll down a 50 page text document - it's just one flip of
the wheel, and that's it :)
Hmm. Drivers. Now that's the scary part. I have lost a lot of
faith/trust in Logitech after seeing the absolute disaster that is
the QuickCam drivers. Want to screw your machine over good? Install
a Logitech QuickCam. My desktop machine still isn't quite healthy
again after I made that mistake, despite removing the cam and
drivers...

Hmm. They had the wired version of it at BestBuy and it didn't look particularly small.

The best BT mouse I ever had was Microsoft's. Comfy, nice weight, and battery went for about 2 months (AAs).
Laptop mice are too small for my fingers, and usually just uncomfy.

@CAW: you usually can't tell about the real size on pictures alone. go chekc the amazon user ratings/feedbacks. most say it's small/travel sized..

I love the scroll wheel on my logitech v270 bluetooth mouse.
